Stevens Point Wisconsin History
Stevens Point is an older Wisconsin city, founded in 1836. Like many other Wisconsin towns, such as Nekoosa, Stevens Point traces its roots to Native American tribes. The land upon which the city sits was historically part of Menominee homelands. It was also the site of a Wolf River Menominee reservation. In the town’s early years, most of its population was Native Americans and white loggers. However, with the coming of the U.S. Postal Service in 1845, the city’s population tripled.
Logging was Stevens Point’s first lucrative industry, and continues as one today. Many Stevens Point residents have jobs in forestry and other wood-based fields, such as the furniture industry. Others work in nearby quarries, providing alternative building materials for houses and businesses.
