Stevens Point Wisconsin History

Stevens Point is an older Wisconsin city, founded in 1836. Like many other Wisconsin towns, such as Nekoosa, Stevens Point traces its roots to Native American tribes. The land upon which the city sits was historically part of Menominee homelands. It was also the site of a Wolf River Menominee reservation. In the town’s early years, most of its population was Native Americans and white loggers. However, with the coming of the U.S. Postal Service in 1845, the city’s population tripled.

Logging was Stevens Point’s first lucrative industry, and continues as one today. Many Stevens Point residents have jobs in forestry and other wood-based fields, such as the furniture industry. Others work in nearby quarries, providing alternative building materials for houses and businesses.

Stevens Point Wisconsin Events

Stevens Point is well known for its dedication to arts and culture. The University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point’s Noel Fine Arts Center hosts a variety of concerts and shows throughout the year. Local breweries and wineries, such as the Sunset Point Winery, offer frequent tours and tastings. Local library events, such as puppet shows and preschool story hours, are perfect for young families, while frequent senior social hours let older citizens enjoy time with their peers.

Visit the Stevens Point Brewery, one of the oldest continually operating breweries in the nation, or one of the other several craft breweries, wineries or distillery that call the area home.

Explore the best views in the county on foot or by bike, and follow the Green Circle Trail, a 27-mile trail that circles the city of Stevens Point winding along the Wisconsin River, Little Plover River and other tributaries. The trail head for the Green Circle Trail is located in the Schmeeckle Reserve, a 280 acre nature preserve on the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point campus. Hike or bike the Ice Age Trail and wind through the hills and valleys once shaped by glaciers.
