Nekoosa Wisconsin Homes for Sale

Welcome to Nekoosa, Wisconsin. The small town has been an integral part of Wisconsin for centuries. Its history goes back to the Winnebago tribe, which gave Nekoosa its name. In the Winnebago or Ho-Chunk language, “Nekoosa” means “running water.” As the name suggests, Nekoosa homes are known for their location among rapids and other water sources. Many Nekoosa residents are descended from river travelers, such as raftsmen hired to transport lumber through the area. If you’re considering Nekoosa real estate, you’re considering owning property in an area with rich history.

Respecting Heritage

Nekoosa’s residents are proud of their Winnebago Native American heritage. About 1.2% of the population is Native American, and another 1.7% identifies as belonging to two or more ethnicities, which may include Native American. Additionally, the town has recently added a school specifically designed to teach Ho Chunk language, history, and heritage to the district. Nekoosa is also known as the ancestral home of Chief Oshkosh, a revered Native American leader.

Nekoosa Employment and Industry

Nekoosa’s first sawmill was built in 1831, and the town still relies on wood as a chief industry. It is also home to a large paper mill, formerly known as the Nekoosa Paper Company. The Nekoosa Paper Company merged with Port Edwards in 1908, creating the Nekoosa Edwards Paper Company (NEPCO). In 1990, NEPCO was purchased by Georgia Pacific, and later sold to the Canadian company Domtar. However, the original Nekoosa paper mill still exists.
